The Glasshouse Journal Following our trees from seed to Niwaki.

Our cultivation journal captures the evolution of our Niwaki trees, chronicling their journey from seed to artistry, especially at the Bunbury Glasshouse.

August 2026 — The Beginning

The journey of the first trees for the Bunbury Glasshouse begins here. In 2026, we sowed our initial batch of 300 Scots pine seeds (Pinus sylvestris), marking the start of a new generation of trees destined for the Bunbury Glasshouse.

These seedlings are not only being nurtured for immediate growth; we have a much longer vision in mind. Through our dedicated Bunbury Glasshouse Selection Process, we will identify and retain the strongest and most promising trees as premium rootstocks for the future grafting and cultivation of Niwaki trees.

Our aim extends beyond simple growth. Over the coming years, we will select for qualities that will ultimately shape the character of the finished Niwaki tree — including vigor, structure, trunk development, and suitability for long-term cultivation.

The seedlings you see today represent the very beginning of a cultivation journal that will unfold over many years. Those that pass the selection criteria will form the foundation for our future Niwaki specimens.

Today, they are merely seedlings, but with time, some may transform into mature Niwaki trees.

It takes twelve years from seed to Niwaki.

This is where the journey begins.

The beginning of something that will take time

The Bunbury Glasshouse is slowly taking shape, developing one Niwaki tree at a time. In this cultivation journal, we will document the growth of our Niwaki trees from seed and cutting to their eventual transformation into mature specimens.

This journal will chronicle everything from propagation and grafting to training, pruning, and field cultivation, capturing the entire process as it unfolds—including our successes, challenges, and the lessons learned along the way.
